Cristiano Ronaldo set to face a 12-game ban after pushing the referee in Real Madrid's 3-1 win over Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup first leg.

The Portuguese international was angry after being shown a second yellow card for diving in Barca's 18-yard box following a challenge by Samuel Umtiti.

The four-time Ballon d'Or winner initially walked away in disbelief with his hands on his head but then turned back towards the official before pushing him with his right hand.

Ronaldo who came in as a substitute in the game had already been shown the first yellow card two minutes before the second for taking his shirt off after scoring a screamer to put his team in the lead.

According to Article 96 of the Spanish federation’s rule book, any player who “grab, push or shake” a referee in a manner that is “slightly violent” could get a ban of 4 to 12 matches.

The referee stated in his match report: “Once I showed him the red card, the player (Ronaldo) pushed me lightly showing discomfort.”
